DEAD RECKONING: THE NEW SCIENCE OF CATCHING KILLERS By Michael Baden, MD and Marion Roach Simon & Schuster, ; 288 pages
While most forensic nurses won't be on the trail of a murderer, "Dead Reckoning: The New Science of Catching Killers" is an engaging, thought-provoking book that delivers the best lessons in anatomy and physiology blended with heartfelt yet objectively clinical explanations of forensic science. Famed forensic pathologist Michael Baden, MD, is back with new collaborator Marion Roach for another fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the process only to which medical examiners, cops and defense attorneys are privy.
Drawing from both obscure and famous cases, Baden and Roach explain the principles of forensic analysis, touching upon a variety of developments in toxicology, DNA, blood spatters, forensic entomology and forensic dentistry. Juxtaposed against the usual dry tomes encountered during medical studies, "Dead Reckoning" is a lively, compelling page-turner that draws in readers and escorts them through the morgue doors, to that stainless steel autopsy table, and into the bodies that tell tales, both literally and figuratively.
While the 11-chapter book retells fascinating accounts of some of the world's most notorious murders and explains the complicated forensic science employed, it never loses its insightfulness. Keen descriptions of autopsies are laced with anecdotes revealing Baden's compassionate, reverent approach to handling bodies; while passages that explore high-profile cases are accompanied by thoughtful analyses of the responsibility forensic pathologists have to the victims they examine, as well as to the science they serve.
In his 40-year career-including serving as chief medical examiner for New York City -- Baden has performed more than 20,000 autopsies and testified in more than 1,000 trials. "Dead Reckoning" is a deft chronicle of Baden's experience, observations and relationships with his colleagues that is at turns wickedly humorous and appropriately somber, but always provocative. In its emphasis on detecting, protecting and preserving trace evidence, the books holds important lessons for forensic nurses who want to be meticulous and exacting in their work. "Dead Reckoning" is a lesson in forensics that is easy for medical personnel and laypersons alike to digest, but its incisive precautions about sloppy science are hard to forget. --Kelly M. Pyrek
