Puritan Swabs
|
Hardwood Products Co. has introduced three new styles of its Puritan swab, a sterile, individually wrapped, foam-tipped applicator that allows crime scene investigators to gather DNA from the tiniest of blood stains. In recent years, advances in polymerase chain reaction technology have made it possible to obtain DNA results from extremely small samples of dried blood. The challenge for crime scene investigators has been to find a swab that can reliably pick up small, diluted bloodstains.
According to forensic experts Angelo Della Manna of the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences and Shawn Montpetit of the University of Alabama's Department of Justice Sciences, it is possible for DNA typing results to be obtained from dilutions containing as little as 1 percent blood content using the swab.

Preimptive Test for Seminal Fluid
|
MedTech Forensics offers an easy-to-use Presumptive Test for Seminal Fluid. When investigating crime scenes or collecting evidence, it can be helpful to perform a presumptive test for the presence of semen on those stains that fluoresce under ultraviolet light. Prostatic acid phosphatase is an enzyme produced in the prostate gland and is found in semen in a much higher level than in any other body fluid. All the chemical reagents are sealed in glass crush ampules and packaged in a disposable applicator. Part of the suspected stain is transferred to the provided transfer paper with sterile water contained in the first vial. The second applicator is squeezed to crush the glass ampule located inside.
The applicator should be shaken for a few seconds to ensure complete mixing of the components. The cap is removed and the applicator should be squeezed to apply the reagents to the transferred stain. A positive result for the presumptive presence of semen is indicated by a deep purple color. There are six applicators per box.
