Author's Book Persuades the Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs to Honor Three VA Nurses for Turning in a Serial-Killer Colleague

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Non-fiction crime author M. William Phelps will deliver a keynote speech at a black-tie gala in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 17, , at the Capitol Hill Club to members of Congress, VA nurses, VA senior staff and Veterans Service Organization representatives about his book, "Perfect Poison: A Female Serial Killer's Deadly Medicine." The book, published in June, details the story of three VA nurses -- John Wall, Kathy Rix and Renee Walsh -- who blew the whistle on their co-worker, Kristen Gilbert.
"These three nurses deserve a night unto themselves," Phelps says. "They did what many of us would not have done-they turned in what was a friend and co-worker, and accused her of the most egregious and evil acts imaginable -- serial murder -- without any real solid physical evidence."
"After reading the story of these three nurses in "Perfect Poison," Margo Donaldson Snider, chair of the Nurses Organization of Veterans Affairs (NOVA) Foundation board of directors, says, "I was moved by the courage demonstrated by these individuals; the NOVA Foundation enhances the quality care for veterans through support and recognition of the nursing staff. I could think of no others more deserving of this recognition."
In his book, Phelps writes about the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northampton, Mass., where former VA nurse and convicted serial killer Kristen Gilbert went on a murderous rampage for seven years.
"I had it in the back of my mind and was hoping that they would be honored one day for their role in bringing down one of the nation's worst contemporary female serial killers," Phelps said. "But I never set out to write a book about 'heroic' nurses. As I began to interview and research, their stories just became awe-inspiring. They are indeed heroes."
Phelps's speech will be centered around the theme of "VA Nursing: Celebrating Unsung Heroes." Nurses Kathy Rix, Renee Walsh and John Wall will be honored and given awards for their role in bringing down serial killer Kristen Gilbert.
"This is very nice and very exciting," says Renee Walsh. "NOVA is probably the second largest nursing organization in the country. And we owe it in no small part to M. William Phelps's book."
"Perfect Poison" has already spawned a Discovery Channel documentary to be aired in October, profiles in the Globe magazine, the New York Post, Advance for Nurses magazine, Writer's Digest, and Forensic Nurse magazine, among other publications.
