Verdugo Hills Hospital Dedicates Expanded Emergency Department

GLENDALE, Calif. -- With a ceremonial ribbon cutting and numerous community dignitaries on hand, Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) dedicated its newly expanded emergency department yesterday. When fully operational next month, the expanded emergency department will house 12 private treatment rooms (up from seven), increased capacity effectively designed to reduce wait times, private consultation and triage rooms and a special waiting area for children.
The hospital's decision to expand its emergency department comes at a time when hospital emergency departments across the country are plagued with overcrowding and many are shutting their doors due to inadequate funding. According to VHH's CEO Leonard LaBella, the hospital's board of directors "made the expansion a priority given the growing community demand.
"The expansion will allow the hospital to see more patients, more quickly and in a more patient-oriented treatment environment," LaBella said. "Providing exceptional treatment and service to the local community is our No. 1 priority and an enhanced emergency department helps us do that 24 hours a day."
Much of the money for the $1.3 million expansion came through private donations raised by the hospital's foundation. Established in , the foundation raises funds for the hospital's current needs and long-range growth including equipment purchases, facility upgrades and community education support.
"The new facilities enable us to treat more patients simultaneously in a very comfortable environment," said Betty Jo Torres, RN, clinical director of emergency services. "The children's waiting area is a welcomed addition since we see so many children in our emergency room." Verdugo Hills Hospital is an EDAP -- Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics -- facility.
The Verdugo Hills Hospital emergency department expansion continues the tradition of a facility that was founded in to meet the demand for emergency services due to its proximity to the Angeles Crest Highway. VHH's emergency room was originally designed to accommodate no more than 1,000 patients per month. Now, the hospital is treating more than 1,500 patients each month from Sunland, Tujunga, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta and Glendale.
Verdugo Hills Hospital, a 158-bed nonprofit acute-care facility, features all private room accommodations, 24-hour emergency services, comprehensive outpatient diagnostic and treatment facilities and a family birthing center. It is the only independent, freestanding hospital in the greater foothill communities.
