Office of the Victim Advocate Unveils New Web Site

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Mary Achilles, Pennsylvania's victim advocate, today unveiled an updated Internet site that offers crime victims easier access to registration for notification of inmate releases.
With the new Web site, www.ova.state.pa.us, crime victims will be able to gain immediate access to services offered by the Office of the Victim Advocate (OVA), including online registration and notification. Viewers will also have access to a "clickable" map of Pennsylvania containing links to local victim services.
"Our new Web site is more user-friendly, more interactive, and contains more information on services available to victims," Achilles said.
The new site also will provide significant internal efficiency enhancements, including easier, secure communications between the Parole Board, the Department of Corrections, and OVA. The efficiencies created by electronic notifications and other forms of information will enable OVA staff to reduce response times and expand opportunities for "one-to-one" service. Since its establishment in June , the Office of the Victim Advocate (OVA) has become a stronghold in advocacy and services for victims of crime, Achilles said. OVA's work focuses on victim notification and assisting victims in providing testimony into the release decisions made regarding state-sentenced inmates.
Services offered by OVA include assisting victims as they prepare their testimony for submission to the Board of Probation and Parole, Department of Corrections, and Board of Pardons; providing referrals to community services; ensuring that victims understand their rights under Pennsylvania's Crime Victims Act; and helping victims secure restitution.
