PORT HURON, Mich. -- Maureen Rowark, founding member and Queen Mum of the Bluewater Les Chapeaux Rouge Chapter - Red Hat Society and 10 of her colleagues have shed their inhibitions and all their clothes except their bright red hats to support Carolyn's Place, a domestic violence shelter operated by Safe Horizons in Port Huron.
Rowark has felt indebted to Safe Horizons since it helped her 12 years ago
following a rape in her home. "It was an awful experience and the people
there were the only ones who really seemed to care," said Rowark. "I'm very
grateful for a chance to pay them back."
The "We Can Still Make Waves" calendar is literally modeled after the
project made famous in the movie "Calendar Girls." Eleven women, aged
55-81 posed for the calendar wearing nothing but accessories and placed in
surroundings to keep the photos tastefully tame.
The photos were taken by Jody Ross, a professional photographer in Port
Huron, and have whimsical themes appropriate for each month. They are sepia
toned -- with the exception of the red hats each model is wearing -- the badge
of their membership in the Red Hat Society. All proceeds from the sale of the
calendar go directly to support Safe Horizons.
For more than 25 years, Safe Horizons has served the victims of domestic
violence and sexual assault by providing shelter, crisis assistance, support
groups, advocacy and other services.
