Pediatric SANE Training Offered in August in San Diego County
Posted on: 03/22/

ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- The Pediatric SANE training will be held Aug. 15-17, , sponsored by the Child Abuse Program (CAP) of Palomar Pomerado Health (PPH).  Applicants for the examiner component must be physicians, nurse practitioners, SANEs or advocates.

The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Department of Health Services (DHS) Executive Conference Room located at 600 East Valley Parkway in Escondido, Calif.

This course is designed for investigators, social workers and medical professionals who are interested in developing their roles as interdisciplinary team members for child abuse (nurses should be sexual assault nurse examiners).

Upon completion of the course, student will have a better understanding of how to interview and examine a child who may have been abused, how to document the examination findings and how to interpret the physical findings and any laboratory findings.  Students will be able to recognize, from photographs, signs of accidental and inflicted trauma as well as other medical conditions that can be mistaken for abuse.  In addition, the student will be apprised of other team members’ roles (i.e., law enforcement, social worker and the criminal justice system), as well as the role the examiner will play in giving proper courtroom testimony.  This course is not designed to give hands-on experience in conduction the forensic examination, nor is it adequate training for an individual to begin conducting medical evaluations independently.

Instructors for the course include:

Child Abuse Program Director and Staff, Palomar Pomerado Health

Connie Milton, San Diego Sheriff's Crime Lab,
