Rapsheets.com Launches New Sex Offender Search
Posted on: 04/22/

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Rapsheets.com, the nation's largest online database of criminal records, announces it now offers a unified search of 32 statewide Sex Offender registries on its site for $5 per name. Rapsheets.com members pay $3, and a search of Rapsheets.com's National Criminal Index database includes a search of all 32 state Sex Offender registries for no extra charge.

Because sex offenders may move from state to state -- sometimes without registering in every state -- running a unified search on Rapsheets.com is more thorough than just checking the registry in the state where the person resides. Rapsheets.com has combined these state registries into one convenient search. The company plans to add other states to its database as soon as information is available from the state.

Each state is required to maintain and regularly update current addresses on persons convicted of sex-related offenses since , including aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual contact, kidnapping and various other violent crimes against children.

"This database does not include records of everyone in each state who has ever been convicted of or arrested for a sex offense," says Bill Whitford, chief operating officer of Rapsheets.com. "In fact, each state has different laws as to what constitutes a 'sex offender.' Some states list only the most violent and habitual offenders in their registries, while other states include all sex-related criminal offenders in their registries."

Whitford said, however, offenders are required by law to register with each state and provide current addresses to the respective sex offender registry.

"Rapsheets.com takes reasonable measures to update these records as available, but as in all of our public records, we rely on the completeness and accuracy of each state's records," he said.

A unified search of Sex Offender Registries on Rapsheets.com searches registries from the following states and districts:

Alabama

Alaska

Arizona

Colorado

Connecticut

Delaware

Dist. of Columbia

Florida

Georgia

Illinois

Indiana

Iowa

Kansas

Kentucky

Louisiana

Maryland

Michigan

Minnesota

Mississippi

Nebraska

New Hampshire

New Jersey

New Mexico

New York

North Dakota

North Carolina

South Carolina

Tennessee

Texas

Virginia

West Virginia

Wyoming

These records generally show the offender's name, date of birth or age, description of offense and last registered address. Some records also show the date of the crime and other detailed information.

State laws prohibit users from using information obtained from these records to injure, harass, or commit a criminal act against persons named in the registry, their families, or employers.

Rapsheets.com, a division of Investigation Technologies LLC, performs millions of criminal records searches each year through its Internet site, server-to-server gateways and other sophisticated technologies. It has been compiling criminal records since and now owns more than 120 million records from almost 100 government sources, including courts, departments of corrections, probation agencies, law enforcement agencies and sex offender registries.
