Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency Renews Support for Victim Assistance Academy
Posted on: 06/12/

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (PCCD) today approved a grant of more than $169,000 to fund the Pennsylvania Victim Assistance Academy at the University of Scranton.

PCCD also announced this year's academy will open on June 22.

"The Victim Assistance Academy provides essential training to crime victim advocates from across the state," PCCD chairman Jim Eisenhower said. "The academy also offers advocates an opportunity to share ideas that will help crime victims restore their lives and their dignity."

The Victim Assistance Academy is a five-day, 40-hour-plus course offered through a partnership between PCCD and the University of Scranton. Upon completion, graduates are eligible to receive three college credits.

The $169,482 grant for the academy is provided under federal Drug Control and System Improvement (DCSI) and Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Victim Assistance Academy funds.

This year's Victim Assistance Academy will be held June 22-27, , providing training to 39 victim advocates and criminal-justice practitioners from 15 counties. Funding for the Academy was approved by the commission last year.

Training sessions will focus on more than 25 topics, including child victimization, community crisis, domestic violence, hate and bias crime, professionalizing victim services, sexual assault, and stalking. Instructors include experienced victim assistance professionals from across the state and University of Scranton faculty.

The Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency is the Commonwealth's lead agency for criminal justice policy issues. During this fiscal year, PCCD has distributed more than $140 million in state and federal funding to programs that are proven to prevent crime and strengthen communities. PCCD also provides essential support services to law enforcement agencies and offers financial assistance to victims of crime.
